How to Blog as a Fitness Professional

By 26th March 2013 No Comments

Blogging is a great way to get your business high on search engines such as Google and Yahoo, and best of all it’s absolutely free – you just need to spend some time doing it!

If you’re reading this and don’t have a website, then the first thing you need to do is go to WordPress.com and click the big “Get Started” button.

Just fill in the 4 very quick fields, then click the “Create Blog” at the bottom and follow a few instructions – you should be ready to go in less than 10 minutes.

The 5 Keys to Blogging

There a 5 important things you need to consider when writing a blog post which most people miss. Follow these simple rules to be on your way to online success!

1) Content needs to be 60% original

This is such a fundamental mistake most make! When you write a blog post, the content needs to be your own. If Google sees that your content hasn’t been mostly written by you (i.e. you copied it from elsewhere) then it wont give you any credit at all for writing your blog post. This means you’ll get no benefit at all, and you may as well have not spent the time at all doing it!

2) You need to choose a niche

Writing about a specific topic will help both yourself to come up with interesting things to talk about, and it will help you climb Google quickly too. So if you’re a specialist at a particular sort of bootcamp, write some blog posts on those bootcamps.

3) Focus on your location

Pulling in a location allows your blog posts to be found very quickly and makes it easier to tank above your competition too!

For example we are based in a small village called Hale, so if we were to blog we would make it specific to Hale. For example “Personal Training Hale” or “Bootcamps in Hale”, and then once we start ranking well in the area we can expand out to other locations.

4) Top X lists are awesome

Writing about the top number of ways to do something is the best way to get people to read your bogs. For example “Top 10 ways to lose weight after Easter” is a great title and will get people opening and reading your blogs once they have devoured one too many chocolate bunnies!

5) Fill out the “Holy Trinity” of blog posts

There are 3 things to make sure you fill in when writing a blog post:

Title: As we talked about above, make sure your title is descriptive and encourages people to open.

Description/Content: Try to write 3 – 5 paragraphs for each and every blog you do. That isn’t so much content that it’s difficult to write, and it’s not so little content that Google doesn’t pick it up. Also, remember to pull in your locations!

Tags: You can add what’s known as tags to every blog post you do – as standard most blogs tell you this is optional. However adding tags to a blog post is hugely beneficial! Tags are just a descriptive couple of words describing what you’ve just talked about in the blog.

So for example in this blog post I’ve used the tags:
“blogging for personal trainers”
“wordpress blogging for fitness professionals”

Get Started!

The most important thing about blogging is to actually get started – most people think about blogging, don’t really get it and then give up before they even start.

Write something – anything – at least once per month and you’ll soon get the hand of it, and the benefits are huge…
